30 October 2013

Shetland Arts today announces that the special 50th Anniversary episode of Doctor Who will be screened in 3D in Mareel, at the same time as the UK TV broadcast happens on BBC One on 23rd November (time TBC on 13 Nov).

In addition to the global TV broadcast and the Mareel screening, hundreds of other cinemas in the UK and around the world are also confirming their plans to screen the hotly anticipated special episode simultaneously in full 3D, giving fans another unique opportunity to be part of a truly global celebration for the iconic British drama series. 216 cinemas in the UK and Ireland have already confirmed their participation, and internationally cinema screenings have been confirmed in Germany, Russia, the USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

In addition to Matt Smith the one-off special, entitled The Day of the Doctor stars former Time Lord David Tennant, Jenna Coleman, Billie Piper, and John Hurt. Tickets for The Day of the Doctor at Mareel will go on sale on Tuesday 29 October via Shetland Box Office and cost £8.50 / £6.50.

Since 1963 Doctor Who has been one of the best loved dramas and certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most successful sci-fi series ever. The show has received numerous awards across its 50 years and has seen huge commercial success with over 10 million DVDs and 8 million action figures sold globally. It is also the number one BBC show on iTunes in the UK. BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the UK broadcaster distributes Doctor Who to over 200 territories across the world.

This is just one of the numerous special cinema events lined up for Mareel's Winter Cinema Programme. On Thursday 31 October and Sunday 3 November, customers can see National Theatre Live's Frankenstein, directed by Danny Boyle and starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternating the lead roles (JLM as Dr Frankenstein & BC as his creation on 31 Oct, and vice versa on 3 Nov). On Sunday 17 November, as part of the celebrations to mark the centenary of Benjamin Britten's birth, Mareel will show Aldeburgh Music's Peter Grimes on Aldeburgh Beach. On Sunday 1 December, cinemagoers will get the chance to see David Tennant star in the Royal Shakespeare Company's Richard II. And, also in December, there will be two Bolshoi Ballet screenings: La Corsaire on Sunday 8 December, and Sleeping Beauty on 22 December. Tickets for all these screenings will go on sale on Tuesday 29 October via Shetland Box Office
